Can you tell a difference when you change your oil? How about gas?

Well, can you? I get better gas mileage on 76 gas and I WANT to say the car runs better on new oil in comparison to used oil @ 3-5k miles.

Yeah, well, you know, that’s just, like, your opinion, man.

Edit: I should mention in comparison to Chevron. 1-2 MPG difference.

I notice the engine braking is reduced after a fresh oil change. Could be the placebo effect, but it seems to happen every time.

Nope, never noticed a difference in either (well, except the couple time I got bad gas). Transmission fluid, on the other hand, has made dramatic differences.

I’m about to find out, just changed van oil to Mobil 1 synthetic, I’ll see if it gets any better. Was 20 & 21 mpg for the first 2 fill ups.

There is also a Econ button on dash we are trying that out too.

The Mini shifts better after an oil change - but it shares engine/gearbox oil.

It also runs far better with leaded fuel, though I’m changing to a new head with hardened valve seats so that should eliminate that altogether.

Context: Subaru Forester XT

Oil: engine runs a littler smoother on new oil (for like a day). No difference in fuel economy.

Gas: no noticeable change in fuel economy based on brand. Can notice better acceleration using 93 octane vs. 91/92.

I always think I can tell the difference in engine smoothness and noise levels after an oil change.

As far as fuel goes:

My old ‘98 Volvo V70AWD with the boost turned up HATED ethanol, and got about 15% fuel economy on non-ethanol 91 than on 10% ethanol 93.

The 2011 Hyundai (no longer own) and 2014 FieSTa, both seem to not give a shit, as long as the fuel is not full of water. Both have more pep on 93 octane, but i have never noticed any difference between Shell, Sunoco, Mobil, BP, Irving, or even Cumberland Farms. We don’t have any ‘76 up here.

The motorcycle (‘97 BMW F650, carbs, not injected (though injection WAS an option in ‘97)) doesn’t care if it has ethanol or not, as long as it’s higher octane the better. I found a place that had non-ethanol 95 once on a road trip, the bike wanted to wheelie in second gear roll ons, on that tank... not something you normally expect from something with 50-ish horsepower and 460-ish-lbs kerb weight, wish I could find non-ethanol 95 again. It LOVED that shit. Between ethanol 93 and non-ethanol 91 I really see no difference, but since the carbs have many plastic parts I try to stick to the non-ethanol 91 (which is readily available in my area)

Oil change? No, not really.

Gas? Oh yes I can, depending on what it is.

You see, I drive an FR-S. Every FR-S/BRZ comes with a strategically hidden box of crickets living inside it. Don’t look for them, you’ll never find them because they’re tucked inside the fuel pump. But how can you be sure they’re there? Feed them E10 gas . That perks them right up, sometimes in less than 20 miles of driving. If I put E10 gas in my tank, those crickets sing their song in less than a day.

So it’s non-ethanol only, unless you want people looking at you funny in traffic.

Brand to brand, I don’t notice a difference with fuel, but then I don’t drive often enough for my seat-of-the-pants measurements to be meaningful. The difference between 87 octane and 91/93/94 is huge, though.

Oil change, no difference.

I can tell the difference if I play with oil viscosity. It’s mostly in how it sounds and how smooth it runs. I never really tell by performance.

Gas brand to gas brand, no. I will however never return to the Sunoco around the corner from my house. Got some gas so bad that when the Mustang Sat for a week, it would not start unless I depressed the throttle slightly and it would be choppy for about a minute or so. I’ve been using Speedway gas from further down the street without issue.

The car currently has a computer tune set for 93 octane. At the track one time I ran 100 octane gas with this tune. Consistently ran almost 2/10ths slower in the quarter mile compared to 93. I’ve run nothing but Mobil 1 synthetic 5w20 in that car, so I have no basis for oil. I change it every 6 months, which is almost always under 1000 miles driving, one time under 100.

My Dodge Nitro calls for 10w30. At the last change which was at around 77k miles, I swapped to 10w40. Seems to be better for NVH and less lost between changes. I used to use roughly a quart and a half with the 10w30, which Dodge stated was within limits. I’m about 200 miles away from the 3000 mile mark on the 10w40 and have lost maybe a few ounces; less than 8.

I know in GM V8s the gas makes a huge difference. There is a cheap gas station called Racetrack that I would buy my gas from. One day I bought from somewhere else and noticed I got about 50 more miles out of a tank of gas. Did some testing and found I got 2-3 MPG better on low octane Shell gas than low octane gas from the cheap places.

Also, I get better gas mileage on the ‘summer’ gas formula than the formula they use in winter.

I don’t really notice a change after an oil change. Gas, however definitely. My mileage in the Ranger is pretty abysmal so any change is evident. Usually I run it on plain ol’ 87, regardless of the brand. If I plan on doing a lot of driving I swear by Marathon’s 89 to squeeze out a few more miles.

I do notice if I get a bad tank of gas, but it’s really hit and miss and not brand related at all. Not much difference if I am doing the oil changes - but I do absolutely notice when I get good synthetic back in the motor after a dealer oil change - especially in the colder seasons. The 2.3 MZR in my Mazda seems to be more sensitive to cold than any other car I’ve had, but a good synthetic makes it much happier in winter.
